Default PhD position in Analytical chemistry, Umea Univ. Sweden

PhD student position in Analytical chemistry with focus on marine chemistry and biogeochemistry

http://www.umu.se/umu/aktuellt/arkiv...3-3313-06.html

This PhD position is financed by Umeå Marine Sciences Centre. The project is interdisciplinary and involves participants from the Department of Chemistry, Umeå Marine Sciences Centre, UmU, and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. The PhD student will be a member of the Department of Analytical Chemistry, and the place of work will be at Umeå as well as Norrbyn.

The overall aim of the PhD project is to further develop and apply powerful analytical techniques to study and understand the formation and cycling of mercury compounds in the marine environment.

In the first part of the project refined instrumentation and methodology will be developed for speciation analysis of mercury in marine systems including solid, aqueous and gas phases, as well as biota. The methods will be based on GC-ICPMS analysis and outlined in such a way, that the biogeochemical cycling of mercury compounds in marine model systems can be monitored by additions of isotope enriched mercury compounds.

In the next part these methods will be used in attempts to predict how, for example, meteorological and ecological changes affect the fate (transformation, bioavailability, accumulation) of mercury compounds in the Baltic Sea. Of special interest may be bioturbation caused by the polychaete Marenzelleria viridis. Changes in experimental conditions of model systems imitating the Gulf of Bothnia will be conducted in micro and mesocosm systems located at UMSC’s field station. Laboratories and equipment at Analytical Chemistry, UmU, will be utilized for the chemical analyses.

As a PhD student you will work independently and your supervisors will be scientists from several disciplines (analytical, marine and soil chemistry). You will plan and conduct field sampling and laboratory experiments, some including marine organisms. A related PhD project focusing on organic pollutants has recently started at Environmental Chemistry, UmU, and we plan to coordinate the mesocosm experiments for the two projects.

To qualify for this position you need a minimum of 180 ECTS in total of which 90 ECTS in chemistry, or equivalent competence. Advanced course(s) in Analytical chemistry, or equivalent competence, is also required. Additional studies in Ecology and Biogeo-chemistry are qualifying. It is an advantage if you have a driving license and a car.
The application should contain a CV, academic grades, and a personal letter of one A4 sheet that describes yourself and explains why you are applying for this position. Please also include the names and phone numbers of two reference persons.

For more information, contact Dr Erik Björn, 090-786 51 89, erik.bjorn@chem.umu.se or Associate Professor Erik Lundberg, 090-786 79 78, erik.lundberg@umf.umu.se.

Union information is available from SACO, +46-(0)90-786 51 53, SEKO civil, +46-(0)90-786 52 96 and ST, +46-(0)90-786 54 31.

Applications will be discarded or, if the applicant so wishes, returned two years after the position has been filled.

Your complete application, marked with reference number 313-3313-06, should be sent to the Registrar, Umeå University, SE-901 87 Umeå, Sweden to arrive October 12, 2006 at the latest.
