Default PhD Position in Nanoscience

PhD Position in Nanoscience

The Molecular Electronics and Devices group and the Nano-Organic Chemistry group of the Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands, invite applications for a PhD position to work at the interface of physics and chemistry.

Research Project and Job Description

In this proposed research we aim to design and functionalize (arrays of) top-down fabricated silicon nanowires to investigate their electronic and physico-chemical properties. Challenges are the control over the device geometry and the electrical contacts. Additional challenges include the exploitation of designed, responsive properties (e.g., magnetic, light-induced, switching, conformational changes, specific binding) via the chemical functionalization of the silicon nanowires and to elucidate electronic transport mechanisms in the fabricated nanodevices. This interdepartmental, experimental research
involves clean room chemistry at the TU Delft Nanofacility, surface chemistry and electronic investigation.

Requirements

We are looking for an excellent and motivated, experimental researcher with an interest in molecular electronic devices. The candidate should have an MSc degree in chemistry, physics, or materials science and should also have good communication skills in English (both in writing and in speaking).

Organization

The Kavli Institute of Nanoscience is part of the Faculty of Applied Sciences and consists of seven research groups and the Nanofacility (clean room). The Molecular Electronics and Devices group (http://med.tn.tudelft.nl) studies the electronic, magnetic, and mechanical properties of molecules, assemblies of molecules, and crystals of molecules. Top-down nanotechnology is used to build nanometer-scale structures that are used to hold molecules or to make electrical contact to them. Bottom-up technologies include self-assembly techniques, which are used to place molecules between
electrodes or to arrange them into assemblies like fibers or crystals.

The chemical engineering department (DelftChemTech) of Delft University of Technology is also part of the Faculty of Applied Sciences and has a strong focus on nano-chemical engineering. The new chair of Nano-Organic Chemistry at DelftChemTech (www.dct.tudelft/noc) focuses on the design, synthesis and assembly of (bio)organic molecules to nano-sized architectures, thus exploiting the opportunities for
inserting chemical functionality in these systems. The modification and optimization of supramolecular interactions deals with organic systems, and also with hybrid organic/inorganic concepts. Focus will be given to a) the formation and stability of nanocapsules and b) functionalized surfaces, in particular nanowires, which will be investigated as a promising way to develop chemical sensors and biosensors.

Conditions of Employment

The successful candidate will be employed full-time by the TU Delft for a fixed period of 4 years within which he or she is expected to write a dissertation leading to a doctoral degree (PhD thesis). The estimated monthly PhD starting salary is € 2,000 per month gross and will increase to a maximum of € 2,558 gross in the fourth year. Benefits and other employment conditions are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.

Application or Additional Information

The position is open as of March 1, 2008 and will remain open until filled. To apply for this position, please send a letter with your motivation, current research interests, a list of publications, a CV and the contact details of at least two references. Further information and applications can be addressed to:

Default PhD position in Nano-Biomaterials, INPL-Nancy, France

- Evaluations biologiques in vitro (interactions particules-cellules tumorales, cytotoxicité) et in vitro (souris)
