3 PhD scholarships at the Fuel Cells and Solid State Chemistry Department

1, Anodes for solid oxide fuel cells operating at 400 °C

Apply before: 08.06.2008 at 12:00 (noon)

Do you want to help develop innovative and environmentally friendly energy technologies for the future?

The Fuel Cells and Solid State Chemistry Department at Risø DTU is among the world’s research leaders in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) – a technology for clean and efficient conversion of chemical energy (in the form of, e.g., natural gas, hydrogen, biogas, ammonia or methanol) into electricity and heat. In addition we have activities within a number of related topics in functional ceramics.

Project description
An SOFC is an assembly of an electrolyte, an anode and a cathode. Present day operating temperatures of 650-850 °C are dictated by the electrolyte and electrodes, whose performances are strongly temperature dependent. A number of issues of components cost and cell lifetime can be overcome by reducing the operating temperature to around 400 °C. This will require electrolytes of higher ionic conductivity or smaller thickness and electrodes based on new materials and structures.

In the project anodes will be developed for such low-temperature fuel cells. The anodes will be produced from oxide or metal films, possibly including second phases. Candidate materials include composites such as Ni-electrolyte cermets. The anodes will be characterized with respect to their structural and electrical characteristics. Fuel cells of both the conventional, two chamber type, and the single chamber type, will be designed and tested using a variety of fuels, with attention to fuel conversion and current efficiency. This work will be done in close collaboration with a second candidate working on cathodes. Part of the project will consist in the modelling of electrode and cell design.

Experimental methods available for the project include a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) facility for thin film deposition, X-ray diffractometers, scanning and transmission electron microscopes, and extensive test and characterization facilities for fuel cells.

Qualifications

* Master’s degree in engineering, chemistry, physics, materials science or similar
* knowledge of solid state physics or electrochemistry
* preferably experience with experimental methods for materials characterization
* ability to work independently, to plan and carry out complicated tasks, and to be a part of a large, dynamical group
* good communication skills in English, both written and spoken

We offer
We offer an exciting and challenging job in an international environment.

3, Corrosion in electrolysis stacks at high temperatures

Apply before: 08.06.2008 at 12:00 (noon)

Do you want to help develop innovative and environmentally friendly energy technologies for the future?

The Fuel Cells and Solid State Chemistry Department at Risø DTU is among the world’s research leaders in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). In addition we have activities within a number of related topics in functional ceramics, including high-temperature electrolysis.

Solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) use electrolysis of water (steam) and CO2 to convert electrical energy to chemical energy, stored in the form of, e.g., hydrogen, methane or methanol. This makes it possible to store surplus wind power for use at peak demand or for the transport sector. The cells are stacked between metallic interconnects to reach sufficient system size. The durability of these interconnects, which degrade by corrosion, is crucial for the system lifetime.

Project description
The project aims to describe the corrosion processes on the interconnects, and in particular their dependence on steam pressure and temperature. A newly designed unique equipment for thermal analysis under high steam pressure will be used for the study. The protective oxide layers which form under corrosion will be characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. An important goal of the study will be to identify better interconnect materials and possible protective coatings to increase the durability.

Qualifications

* Master’s degree in engineering, chemistry, physics, materials science or similar
* preferably experience with experimental methods for materials characterization and/or knowledge of solid state physics
* ability to work independently, to plan and carry out complicated tasks, and to be a part of a large, dynamical group

Uppsala University hereby declares the following position to be open for application:

PhD student position in Organic Chemistry directed towards Molecular Electronics

at the Department of Biochemistry and Organic Chemistry.

Molecular electronics is a rapidly emerging research field at the interface between chemistry, physics, and engineering in which electron transport through molecules is investigated. The ultimate goal is design of molecules that function as miniaturized electronics components. One can also expect that completely new applications areas will open up as the field grows. Present research in molecular electronics should, however, be classified as fundamental and the applications lie ahead in time.

A new constellation in molecular electronics is presently being formed at Uppsala University; the Uppsala University UniMolecular Electronics Center (U3MEC) composed of eight different research groups and with a focus on molecular electronics based on single or small assemblies of molecules. The U3MEC constellation comprises expertise in chemistry, physics and engineering sciences, experimentalists as well as theoreticians. Within the U3MEC constellation, a number of PhD study positions are now available:

One PhD student position in the group of Assoc. Prof. Henrik Ottosson at the Department of Biochemistry and Organic Chemistry. The project will involve design and synthesis of novel organosilicon,-germanium, and -tin compounds, and the subsequent characterization of their spectroscopic and electrochemical properties as well as their assembly into nanoelectronics platforms for investigations of their electron transport properties.

The successful PhD student candidate should have a master of science in chemistry or the equivalent. He/she must have (i) a solid experience in organic and/or organometallic synthesis, (ii) documented good knowledge in physical chemistry and spectroscopic characterization, and desirably also (iii) documented interest in computational chemistry and theories of chemical bonding. In addition to a good background in these science areas, good skills in oral and written English are also required. An ability and desire of the candidate to work in a multidisciplinary and visionary environment is crucial.

The PhD study position corresponds to four years of full time studies, with courses of appr. 1 year and 3 years of research work. A tentative starting date is early autumn 2008.

Uppsala University is striving to achieve a more equal gender balance among its PhD students and female candidates are particularly invited to apply.

Complete applications should include (i) a brief yet comprehensive description of research interest, past experience and future vision, (ii) a CV, (iii) copies of exams, degrees and grades, (iv) a copy of your Master thesis (or a draft thereof). PhD Student in Polyelectrolyte Gels

Delft, (Zuid-Holland), 38 hours per week Delft University of Technology

Job description
Polyelectrolyte gels are permanently crosslinked polymer networks formed by polymer chains with chemical groups that ionize when in a polar solvent. They can absorb and retain 1.000 times their weight in water. They also exhibit a fascinating reversible volume phase-transition, triggerable by minute variations in temperature, solvent composition, pH, external electric fields or light. Despite the great progress made in the last decade on the response of those systems when stimulated by external fields, the phase transitions in the context of mass and ion transport, mechanical instabilities or under external constraints have yet to be explored. The potential of such soft actuators in Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) is huge since they can provide physical work via an external stimulus, but the powerful thermodynamic "physico-chemical-mechano drive" intrinsic to such systems has not yet been considered. The project aims to examine the physico-chemical bases of the actuation response of polyelectrolyte gels in response to external fields when submitted to confined geometries, focusing on the fundamentals of charge and mass transport triggered by phase transitions in confined geometries. The gels’ potential for MEMS and microfluidics will also be explored. The research will employ experimental techniques such as microfabrication and local probes, e.g., Atomic Force Microscopy.

PhD Student Dopamine Modification of Interfaces between polymers and metals

Eindhoven, (Noord-Brabant), 40 hours per week Technische Universiteit Eindhoven

Job description

The performance of coatings often depends crucially on the adherence of the coating to the substrate. In order to improve the contact and bonding between coating and substrate nowadays often the surface is modified, in other words, a pre-treatment or adherence promoter is applied. While effective in particular cases, there seems to be no universal promoter, harmless to environment and applicants. The recent application of dopamine and related compounds is an exception. It is the purpose of the present proposal to investigate the mechanism of operation of this surface modifier and a few similar compounds. To that purpose, the structure (orientation of promoter with respect to substrate, coverage of the substrate, thickness of promoter layer, etc.), and behaviour of this surface modifier on various polymer and metallic substrates will be studied as a function of environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, pH, salt) and as a function of time. Both the short-term and long-term adherence of coatings deposited using this type of promoter will be studied.
